[Nobel Diary Day 8] Professor Sakaguchi Attended a Joint Press Conference

The day after the Nobel Prize award ceremony, Distinguished Honorary Professor Shimon Sakaguchi started his day by receiving his medal and diploma at the Nobel Foundation, concluding with attendance at the banquet hosted by the Swedish Royal Family.

The Nobel Prize medal and diploma awarded at the previous day's ceremony are returned to the Nobel Foundation that same day. At 10:00 AM, Professor Sakaguchi visited the Nobel Foundation to formally receive the medal and diploma once more. After leaving the foundation, he kindly responded to questions from media on standby.

Next, he visited Kungsholmens gymnasium, a high school in Stockholm, where he gave a special lecture answering questions from the students. When asked, “What are the important things in conducting research?” Professor Sakaguchi replied, "First, stick to what you love. That becomes the driving force for success in research and many other things. Another important thing is to explore and connect with the world outside yourself. Breaking down doors and encountering new perspectives will expand your possibilities." Professor Sakaguchi's lecture provided a powerful stimulus to the high school students in Stockholm, inspiring the young people to take new steps forward.

For lunch, he went to a sushi restaurant with Nobel Attaché Anna and others. They had enjoyable conversations in a relaxed atmosphere, in the car and during the meal as well.

In the afternoon, he attended a joint press conference hosted by the Embassy of Japan in Sweden, where he shared his thoughts the day after receiving the Nobel Prize along with Kyoto University Distinguished Professor Susumu Kitagawa, the chemistry laureate.

Afterwards, Professor Sakaguchi changed into his tailcoat for a photo session before attending the banquet hosted by the Swedish Royal Family at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Having put on the tailcoat the last few consecutive days, he seemed to put it on more easily than he did yesterday. The Medal of the Order of Culture seemed to be very well received by the international participants.

Back in his room, Professor Sakaguchi enjoyed checking Japanese news and looking at photos from the award ceremony and press conference.
