Guide for use of Osaka University Archives

Open daily excluding:

(1) Saturdays, Sundays,

(2) holidays defined as national holidays by The Law concerning National Holidays (Law #178, 1948), and

(3) yearly, December 29 ~ January 3.

・Hours: 9:30 a.m. ~ 4:30 p.m.

Acceptance of requests for using repository: 9:30 a.m. ~ 12:00 noon, 1:00 p.m. ~ 4:00 p.m.

When visiting the Archives: Please sign the register at the Entrance Gate to the Life Sciences Library, receive and put on an Archives visitor name tag, and proceed to the 4th floor.

When the Life Sciences Library is closed or Archive services are temporarily suspended, those hoping to use the Archives are requested to state their business in the intercom at the entrance on the left side of the library.

Requests to visitors:

  • Refrain from visiting the Archives if you feel unwell and have symptoms such as a fever or cough.
  • Make sure to receive an Archives visitor name tag at the Entrance Gate to the Life Sciences Library.

Reading Room

Individuals hoping to view materials stored at the Osaka University Archives may view them in the Reading Room. To use this service, a user registration card is required. Please complete registration procedures for obtaining this card. (If you will make use of the repository for only one day, registration may be omitted.) Show your user card to the receptionist.

Procedures for applications to view specified historical documents and historical documents (Osaka University Publications and Individual and group documents) posted on the Catalogue of Materials webpage (Japanese only) vary depending on the type of document. For more information, please ask the receptionist.

Use of specified historical documents

• Application for use
Identify materials you wish to view from the catalog and submit a specific request form (Excel) (PDF) for viewing such to the receptionist. Submission by postal mail is also available.

• Limits on use
It may take some time for us to check if the materials you request contain personal information. Disclosure may not be granted on the date of request.

(Use of the Archives does not require a reservation, but it is recommended that you contact the Archives via email before your visit.)

If the materials you request contain information on which a limit of use is placed, disclosure may not be granted or only partial disclosure may be granted.

• Simplified use
Disclosure of documents whose use is not restricted is granted by completing simplified registration. Please submit a simplified request form (Word) (PDF) to the receptionist. Disclosure may be granted on the date of request.

• Obtaining a copy/copies
If you want to copy materials, submit a specific request form for obtaining a copy/copies to the receptionist.

Copying fees (Please have exact change ready when paying for copies.)

• Photographing materials
Users are allowed to photograph materials with a personal camera in the Reading Room. Individuals wanting to photograph materials are requested to submit a specific request form (Word) (PDF) to the receptionist.
To prevent disturbing other users, flash pictures are not permitted and the shutter sound on your camera should be turned off. Individuals needing a stand for taking pictures are requested to inform the receptionist.

• Obtaining a copy/copies
If you want to copy materials, submit a specific request form (Word) (PDF) for obtaining a copy/copies to the receptionist. Self-service photocopy machines are available. If photocopy(ies) are not sufficient, you will have to make use of professional duplication services.

• Photographing materials
Users are allowed to photograph materials with a personal camera in the Reading Room. Individuals wanting to photograph materials are requested to submit a specific request form (Word) (PDF) for such to the receptionist.
