The University of Osaka celebrates the anniversary of its founding on May 1

May 1 marks the anniversary of the founding of the University of Osaka.

On this day, 95 years ago, in 1931, the University of Osaka was born in the Nakanoshima district of Osaka City as Osaka Imperial University with two schools: Science and Medicine.

UOsaka will hold the Icho Festival on May1 and 2 to celebrate the day of its founding, welcome new students, and form friendships among UOsaka community members as well as bonds with local communities.

In addition, on May 2, the University of Osaka will hold its Homecoming Day, an event where alumni, faculty, and staff members from the University of Osaka and Osaka University of Foreign Studies gather together to deepen their ties as members of the UOsaka Family.

Last year was a particularly fruitful one for the University of Osaka, marked by achievements that will contribute to UOsaka’s future growth: the dissemination of research and initiatives for the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, UOsaka students’ first-ever victory in the Japan International Birdman Rally, the designation of the Machikane Crocodylidae fossil as a Natural Monument, and Distinguished Honorary Professor SAKAGUCHI Shimon’s receipt of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The University of Osaka is now five years away from its 100th anniversary in 2031.
Toward this milestone, UOsaka will continue to embody the motto, “Live Locally, Grow Globally,” and advance research, education, and co‑creation as a university leading industrial and social transformation.
