[Nobel Diary Day 4] Professor Shimon Sakaguchi Shares His Research Journey at the Nobel Prize Lecture
Today, Distinguished Honorary Professor Shimon Sakaguchi delivered his Nobel Prize Lecture at the Karolinska Institute, where he shared the culmination of his research achievements with the world.
In the morning, Professor Sakaguchi posed for an official portrait session at the Grand Hotel, where he is staying.
Then, in the afternoon, the highlight of the day, the Nobel Prize Lecture, began in an auditorium at the Aula Medica of the Karolinska Institute.
In front of a packed audience, Professor Sakaguchi gave a lecture titled "Regulatory T Cells for Immune Tolerance: Discovery and Clinical Prospects."
In his lecture, Professor Sakaguchi meticulously explained each step of his research journey, from the discovery of “regulatory T cells,” which led to this award, to the elucidation of their functions. He also presented specific methodological potentials for clinical applications in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer, emphasizing the importance of this research, which he and others worldwide are currently pursuing. In closing, he listed the names of the many researchers who had collaborated with him and expressed his deep gratitude.
When Professor Sakaguchi stated, “Thank you very much for your attention,” the entire audience erupted in long, thunderous applause.
Following the lecture, a reception hosted by the Karolinska Institute and the Nobel Assembly was held, where Professor Sakaguchi enjoyed interacting with attendees in a friendly atmosphere.
