The Outcome of the 10-year Project, Top Global University Project

In 2014, Osaka University was selected for the MEXT’s Top Global University Project (Top Type). This 10-year project will come to close at the end of March 2024.
MEXT: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Promptly after the start of the project, OU Vision 2021, the activity guidelines for the 3rd medium-term goals, were formulated and since then, under this vision, Osaka University, as a top type university, has actively engaged in improving the quality of its international research output and education ability in accordance with the purpose of this project.

During the 3rd medium-term goals period, the environments surrounding universities dramatically changed as seen in the establishment of the Designated National University System. Universities had to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a serious impact on their globalization, and social systems had to be changed in order to achieve carbon neutrality and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In such circumstances, society’s expectations for universities to develop human resources and create innovations have grown.

To respond to the public mandate, at the start of the 4th medium-term goals period in 2022, Osaka University developed its medium- to long-term management vision, the OU Master Plan, which was developed by integrating strategies of vertical elements (strategies for education, research, and management) with strategies of horizontal elements (the improvement of information infrastructure and promotion of diversity & inclusion) that support the vertical elements.

Based on this plan, by utilizing the rock-solid network centering on OU's overseas campuses fortified by the Top Global University Project, Osaka University will further strengthen its global competitive edge and realize education and research to help solve both social issues both locally and globally.

Over the course of 10 years, the university has engaged in various efforts to promote its globalization, diversity, education reform, and governance reform, which have provided a solid basis for the future vision of the university. Please take a look at the pamphlet introducing the outcome of these efforts. (Note: This pamphlet is only available in Japanese.)

This pamphlet was also presented at the 3rd External Expert Meeting held on November 29, 2023.
