Program Overview
This program aims to improve participants' English language proficiency and academic presentation skills in English by participating in an educational program at the Center for International English for Speakers of Other Languages (CIESOL) of De La Salle University, with which UOsaka has an inter-university agreement. The program also provides participants with chances to explore the challenges associated with achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and acquire experience and knowledge useful for their future career.

*This program will be held as an Osaka University International Certificate Program S (OUICP-S), a hybrid-type international exchange program.

Program Content

Flow of the Program

1) Information Session
Participants will get information about this program (including their final assignment), course scheduling and class assignments at De La Salle University, the local situation in the Philippines, and safety precautions. This session will be held about 1 month before departure for the Philippines and will accommodate participants’ schedules.
2) SDGs and Asia-Pacific Region I (one credit)
Participants will acquire an understanding about the social, cultural, and biological characteristics of the Philippines and the rest of southeast Asia, while studying about issues regarding SDGs specific to the region. They will decide on an SDG of focus depending on their field and/or interests and prepare a presentation in English. The times and dates for this course will accommodate participants’ schedules. (Part of this program will be implemented online using the lesson support system CLE (Collaboration and Learning Environment).) This course is also scheduled to be held together with participants in the SDGs Field Study - Bamboo: Yunnan and Vietnam (OUICP-S).
3) Career Advancement English Program II (one credit)
Located in Manila, The Philippines, De La Salle University is one of the Philippines’ most prestigious private universities, home to a wealth of educational facilities. In Career Advancement English Program II, students will develop their skills in English conversation and academic presentations through courses taught at the Center For International English For Speakers of Other Languages (CIESOL), the English language education facility at De La Salle University. Students will be divided into classes by level and attend three 2-hour long classes (2 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon for a total of 6 hours) each day. (Students will be divided into their classes during an online session scheduled for February.)
Participants will sharpen their English skills and learn about local culture and society through the International Center Student Volunteer Program (IC BUDDY) to foster relationships between local and international students and going on excursions.
At the end of the program, students will deliver presentations in English about Philippine society and SDGs based on what they prepared in the "SDGs and Asia-Pacific Region I" course and what they learned during the program, after which they will participate in a discussion with students from the Philippines.
4) Study Report Submission
In addition to their course assignments, participants will have to submit an 800-word study report in English within two weeks of their return to Japan. They will be informed of the topic, format of the report, and other instructions in the information session. A certificate of completion will be granted to those who have submitted this report.
