University logo
The official logo of Osaka University was created by renowned Japanese graphic designer TANAKA Ikko and was adopted to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the university’s founding in 1991.
"The design for this logo was based on the ginkgo leaf, which has served as the beloved symbol of the university for 60 years. The three arcs in its structure are derived from a combination of three O’s, the first letter of Osaka. Additionally, these three O’s represent the historical links and deep connections between three groups—namely, the university, its students, and the citizens of Osaka—all while emphasizing the intelligence and dignity befitting of a university with such a storied history." – TANAKA Ikko, on the adoption of this logo
The motif of the ginkgo leaf can be traced back to the educational institution that was the roots of the Faculty of Medicine and would continue to be used in the flag for Osaka Prefectural Medical School, which would later become the Faculty of Medicine.
