そもそも「単位」って？

1年次に授業を詰め込む阪大生

授業の履修単位数では、阪大生は全体的に1年次と3年次において履修単位数が高くなる傾向があります。特に1年次前期の履修数は「平均27単位」と高く、これは大学設置基準で定められている「1単位あたり45時間の学習」に換算すると、1週間あたり81時間、土日も含めて1日当たり11.57時間の学習が課せられていることになります。

世界適塾構想で提唱されている「学問による調和ある多様性の創造」を実現するためには、多数の留学生が大阪大学を留学先として選択し、また多くの学生が大阪大学から短期・長期、あるいは卒業後の更なる学位取得を目指すために留学をすることが望まれます。

ここ数年、全国の留学生の数がやや下がってきているのに対して、大阪大学の留学生の数は年々増加傾向にあります。2014年時点で2,012人の留学生が大阪大学で学んでおり、阪大生の8%が留学生にあたります。

阪大生の1週間の学習時間は世界レベルの30時間

「日本の大学生はあまり勉強しない」という印象がありますが、SERU（学生経験調査）2013によると、阪大生の1週間の学習時間は「約30時間」と、世界の研究大学とほぼ変わりがありません。それではなぜ、日本の大学生は「勉強しない」というイメージがあるのでしょうか？

Over the last several years, the number of international students attending Osaka University has risen consistently despite a general nationwide trend toward fewer international students. As of 2014, a total of 2,012 international students were studying at Osaka University, equivalent to 8% of the student body.

Of those students, the overwhelming majority are enrolled as degree program students, and since around 2007, the number of non-degree program students enrolled for short-term and other programs has been more than the number of degree program international undergraduate students. Whereas the overwhelming majority of degree program international students are from countries in Asia, non-degree program international students represent a comparatively larger number of regions.

Osaka University students spend 30 hours learning per week, a level that is typical of universities worldwide.

Japanese university students have a reputation for not studying very much, but the 2013 Student Experience Survey (SERU) found that Osaka University students spend about 30 hours learning each week, about the same as students at research universities worldwide. How did Japanese students earn their reputation for slacking off?

Overall, there is a trend among Osaka University students to take a large number of credits during their first and third years of study. In particular, they take a large number of credits during the first semester of their first year?on average, 27. Under the University’s founding standards, which require 45 hours of learning per credit, that number of credits is equivalent to 81 hours per week, or 11.57 hours per day, including weekends.
