[This seminar has ended] Osaka University Society-University Co-Creation Seminar Series #4: Preserving and Inheriting Regional Records – Challenges and Prospects of Archives (2019/3/18)

Archival institutions (or "Archives") are institutions and facilities that preserve and display archival documents. Documents held by local governments are disclosed based on Information Disclosure Ordinances and Personal Information Protection Ordinances, but these documents are discarded after the specified retention period.

Thus, archives, which hold historical or cultural materials after the retention period, play an important role in disclosure and academic research of such archival documents. Storing historical materials owned by private citizens in good condition is also an important role of archives.

For this seminar, we’ve invited ITOH Kazuharu ( Archivist, National Archives of Japan), MIWA Munehiro (Professor, Manuscript Library, Kyushu University Library), and YAGIRI Tsutomu (Associate Professor, School of Law, Chukyo University) to discuss the current situation and challenges facing official document preservation of local governments, including criteria for appraising job performance of archivists and archive selection criteria , as well as explore the possibilities of what can be bestowed upon society through co-creation between universities, local governments, and archives.
