Research Integrity
Amid severe dominance in developing science technology and innovation among nations, there is a compelling need for management of new risks associated with globalization and openness of research activities. Also pointed out are the concerns regarding damage to the value of openness and transparency of research, which forms the base of research environment, and the risks of researchers’ conflicts of interest and commitment, although unintentional.
Under such circumstances, the Japanese government finalized its “Responses Related to Ensuring Research Integrity to New Risks Associated with Increasing Internationalization and Openness of Research Activities” at the Integrated Innovation Strategy Promotion Council meeting on April 27, 2021.
In response to this decision, The University of Osaka has decided to strive to ensure the soundness and fairness of research (research integrity) in order to create an internationally trusted research environment so that the university can actively promote international cooperation and exchange while keeping the value of openness and transparency of research.

Objectives of Research Integrity Management
Since researchers are engaged not only in research but also in other activities, their activities may be affected by undue influence from foreign governments and entities. There are concerns about conflicts of interest and technology leakage due to such influence. Thus, The University of Osaka will improve campus-wide risk management of research integrity in cooperation with persons in charge and raise the awareness of researchers about research integrity through training and workshops.
What researchers are asked to do
In order to secure openness of their research activity and achieve accountability for stakeholders, researchers are asked to do the following:
- Recognize new risks associated with increasing internationalization and openness of research
- Understand the importance of securing transparency and accountability in their research
- Submit and report necessary information to their organizations and research fund organizations
