A Helix-to-Coil Transition at the ε-Cut Site in the Transmembrane Dimer of the Amyloid Precursor Protein is Required for Proteolysis
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 106(5), 1421-1426 (2009)

Intramembraneous processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by γ-secretase is the last step in the Aβ peptides production associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Solid-state NMR experiments were performed on the transmembrane-juxtamembrane (TM-JM) region of APP in membrane bilayers to show that GxxxG motifs mediate TM helix homodimerization, and that the TM helix breaks near the first cleavage site by γ-secretase. Our data support a progressive cleavage mechanism for APP proteolysis that depends on the helix-to-coil transition at the TM-JM boundary and unraveling of the TM α-helix.

Pd II /Pd IV Catalytic Enantioselective Synthesis of Bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes via Oxidative Cyclization of Enynes
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 131, 3452-3453 (2009)

We have achieved the first asymmetric Pd II /Pd IV catalysis, which is expected to be an efficient protocol for the synthesis of optically active compounds, by employing the combination of a hypervalent iodine reagent and a chiral spiro bis(isoxazoline) ligand (SPRIX). Enantioselective cyclization of enyne derivatives catalyzed by the Pd–SPRIX complex furnished useful bicyclic lactones with up to 95% ee. Remarkable stability of SPRIX under acidic and oxidative conditions has proven to be crucial for the high enantioselectivity.

Thermodynamic Properties of a S-1/2 Spin-Liquid State in a κ-type Organic Salt
Nature Physics, 4, 459-462 (2008)

In triangular lattices with two-dimensional structure, geometric frustration prohibits the formation of ordering and therefore a spin-liquid ground state is expected. In this paper, we reports on the first thermodynamic evidence for the realization of a spin-liquid ground state through a single-crystal calorimetric study of the dimer-based organic charge transfer salt κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Cu 2 (CN) 3 . In addition, we have observed an unexpected hump structure in the heat capacity around 6 K which may indicate a crossover into the quantum spin-liquid. These observations raise a novel aspect for the spin-liquid physics of two-dimensional triangular system.

Direct Observation of Hardy's Paradox by Joint Weak Measurement with an Entangled Photon Pair
New journal of physics, 11, 033011 (2009)

In quantum mechanics, we often encounter a counterintuitive phenomenon. Hardy’s thought experiment is a striking example, in which a paradoxical statement is inferred if one asks about the trajectories of the particles passing through an overlapping pair of Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We performed a photonic version of the experiment and observed the trajectories of photons via “weak measurement”. Our results indeed revealed the paradoxical nature that each of the two photons follows the overlapping arm with unit probability, while the joint probability is zero.
