UOsaka selected for the EPOCH initiative
The University of Osaka was selected on July 31, 2026, for the EPOCH (Empowering Research Platform For Outstanding Creativity and Harmonization) initiative administered by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
The EPOCH initiative aims to establish resilient research infrastructures at research universities and other institutions across Japan through the strategic development of core facilities*, including technical staff and University Research Administrators (URAs). The program takes into consideration regional characteristics and the unique strengths and features of participating institutions.
*Core facilities: A research infrastructure framework in which universities and research institutions organize and provide research equipment, facilities, experimental environments, and technical support, enabling shared access and continuous enhancement by multiple researchers.
With the Core Facility Center established in 2023 serving as the coordinating body for these efforts, UOsaka has been advancing the development of research infrastructure, including the provision and shared use of research equipment and facilities. Under this project, we will make strategic investments in the following key areas to elevate these efforts to the next level and establish a “Shared Research Environment at UOsaka” that provides easy access to resources and services for all researchers.
(1) Building a comprehensive research infrastructure system centered on the One Core Facility concept
(2) Enhancing human capital for research infrastructure management
(3) Developing integrated intelligence for research infrastructure data
Furthermore, the project will be overseen by ONOYE Takao, Executive Vice President (in charge of research and information promotion). By aligning the initiative with UOsaka’s management strategy, we will implement reforms to our research and development system that go beyond simply strengthening research infrastructure.
Through the implementation of this project, we will play a central role in the Kansai region by strengthening collaboration with other universities, research institutions, and industry partners, thereby contributing to the development of Japan’s research infrastructure.
