The University of Osaka once again earns the highest rating of Gold in PRIDE Index 2025!
In 2017, the University of Osaka issued the “The University of Osaka Principle on Diversity in SOGI” for UOsaka community members (faculty, staff, and students). In this principle, the University of Osaka has incorporated SOGI (short for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity), the first attempt for a national university, based on the idea that everyone has their own sexual orientation and gender identity, in order to create an appealing, diverse campus environment free of prejudice and discrimination that is also mindful of its members' diversity and rights.
These efforts have earned the university a Gold rating in the PRIDE Index*1 for seven consecutive years starting in 2019. This indicates that the University of Osaka provides a comfortable working and learning environment.
The University of Osaka will continue to work on maintaining an environment that respects each of its members as it strives to become a campus of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
*1 PRIDE Index
The PRIDE Index was formulated by work with Pride*2, a private organization, in 2016 with the aim of realizing workplaces in which LGBTQ+ individuals can work comfortably beyond the framework of corporations and organizations in Japan.
Efforts by corporations and organizations are scored on the following 5 indicators and rated on a scale of gold, silver, or bronze.
Each letter in PRIDE represents the five pillars in the index: Policy, Representation, Inspiration Development and Engagement.
- Policy (action declaration),
- Representation (building LGBTQ and Allies network),
- Inspiration (raising awareness),
- Development (human resources management policy and programs), and
- Engagement/Empowerment (social contribution/public relations activities)
