Best Wishes for the Future: OGATA Koan Award for Outstanding Students

The OGATA Koan Award for Outstanding Students was established in the 2023-24 academic year to recognize students with outstanding grades in the General Education course “History of the University of Osaka (Introduction to Tekijuku and OGATA Koan).”

On June 2, the award ceremony was held at Tekijuku*, where the OGATA Koan Memorial Lecture was also held.

*Tekijuku was opened by OGATA Koan in Osaka as a place of learning in 1838.

From the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate to the Meiji Restoration, Tekijuku students contributed to the formation of Japan as a modern state. Based on that fact, in order to honor the achievements of excellent students and encourage their further activity in the name of OGATA Koan, this year, the awards were granted to the following six students.

OKUMURA Mei (2nd year, School of Human Sciences)
"It is a real honor to receive this award, thinking of Ogata Koan, who established the spirit of Tekijuku, and his wife, Yae, who supported him. I will continue to work hard with his aspirations always in mind."

MIYAZAKI Riho (2nd year, School of Human Sciences)
"I feel extremely honored to be awarded this prestigious award. I will continue to work harder at my studies and extracurricular activities in my university life to live up to the name of the OGATA Koan Award."

OKAMURA Nana (2nd year, School of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences)
"It is such a privilege to be granted the honorable “OGATA Koan Award for Outstanding Students.” Although I still have much to learn, I aspire to be a medical professional who can nurture the next generations, just as Dr. Ogata Koan did."

YANAGIDA Aoi (2nd year, School of Foreign Studies)
"I am completely humbled to be given such a wonderful award. As a UOsaka student, I will work even harder by carrying on the legacy of Ogata Koan."

WADA Maon (2nd year, School of Human Sciences)
"I feel deeply grateful to have the opportunity to visit Tekijuku again on this occasion. I will make further efforts, keeping the attitude for learning in mind."

YOSHIDA Momo (2nd year, School of Human Sciences)
"I am truly privileged to collect the honorable award. It was such an honor to have participated in the award ceremony held at Tekijuku, a place where the spirit of learning lives on. I will continue to study earnestly, cherishing the aspiration of Professor Ogata Koan."
