The University of Osaka celebrates the anniversary of its founding on May 1
May 1 marks the anniversary of the founding of The University of Osaka.
On this day, 94 years ago, in 1931, the University of Osaka was born in the Nakanoshima district of Osaka City as Osaka Imperial University with two schools: Science and Medicine.
The university will hold the Icho Festival on May 2 and 3 to celebrate the day of its founding, welcome new students, and form friendships among UOsaka community members as well as bonds with local communities.
In addition, on May 3, the University of Osaka will hold its Homecoming Day, an event where alumni, faculty, and staff members from the University of Osaka and Osaka University of Foreign Studies gather together to deepen their ties as members of the UOsaka Family.
As the university endeavors to be a global institution and enhance its international presence, the university changed its name from Osaka University to The University of Osaka as of April 2025.
Under this new English name aligned with global standards, the university is committed to preserving and promoting the civic spirit inherited from Kaitokudo and Tekijuku, two schools long rooted in the Osaka area, guided by the motto, "Live Locally, Grow Globally,” as well as actively fulfill our role as a university leading social transformation on the international stage.
