Professor SEKITANI Tsuyoshi wins 29th Ando Momofuku Award

Professor SEKITANI Tsuyoshi of The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (SANKEN) has won the Grand Prize of the 29th Ando Momofuku* Award.

Sponsored by the ANDO Foundation, these awards are presented to creative researchers, developers, and venture businesspeople who promote food science and contribute to the creation and development of new food products.

*ANDO Momofuku, the founder of NISSIN FOOD PRODUCTS, established the Ando Foundation. He is known as the inventor of Nissin Chikin (Chicken) Ramen (instant noodles) and the creator of the brand Cup Noodles.

Professor Sekitani developed a sheet-type wireless electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor system using Flexible and Stretchable Electronics. This innovative technology has enabled to manufacture small, light, thin, wireless, and low-cost measurement equipment that allows to get biological information, such as brain activity, in a natural state, with high accuracy.

His research was highly valued as research to exploit the power of food based on bioinstrumentation technology toward achieving well-being in society. Applying this technology to food science will provide new potential to research on a sense of taste and tasty flavor as well as and foods that support mental and physical health.

The award ceremony was held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Hotel New Otani in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Prior to the award ceremony that day, a press conference for the Grand Prize winners took place, attended by Junichiro KOIZUMI, chairman of the Shokusokai, and Mr. ANDO, president of the Ando Foundation for Sports and Food Culture, followed by a commemorative lecture by Professor SEKIYA.
