3D Model of Tekijuku Completed Thanks to Crowdfunding Support!

Last year, Osaka University started the crowdfunding project entitled “Preserving the Tekijuku* Building, the Origin of Japanese Modernization and Infectious Disease Prevention, for Future Generations,” and your overwhelming support and generosity far exceeded our expectations.

*Tekijuku, a private school to study Western learning, was founded in 1838 by Ogata Koan, a physician and scholar who also built a smallpox vaccination clinic with other doctors. The school produced talented young people who contributed to Japan's modernization.

With your assistance in this project, in cooperation with local community, the university began a point cloud survey (capturing and recording spatial data by 3D scanning) and photogrammetry (extracting measurements from photographs) of the building in April.

Recently, a 3D model reconstruction of Tekijuku building, consisting of millions of data points recorded as extremely accurate 3D data, completed for the conservation, protection and recovery of the building.

Since the original 3D model file size of Tekijuku was too large for standard PCs to handle, the 3D file was reduced to the level without compromising on the quality of the model.

We will show the 3D model of Tekijuku on the web so that more people can see it. Moving forward, we hope to make effective use of this data to develop attractive digital content.
