Future Global Leaders Camp 2024 held
From August 18~20, 2024, the Future Leaders Camp 2024 was held on the Toyonaka Campus by the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) in cooperation with the Osaka University Social Solution Initiative (SSI).
This year, 36 high school students participated in this event. Keeping in mind achieving SDGs by 2030 and looking ahead what a society should aim for after 2030, the students identified challenges and learned about how to perform research and presentations, as well as methods for thinking of solutions for those challenges through lectures and group works.
In this event run by student members of OU’s official student group Flagship, the student members planned and prepared for the program, managing the schedule for the day, and facilitating presentations and group work.
On the first day, in the special lecture “The Diversity of the Muslim World: Young People of Indonesia and Islam” by Professor SUGAHARA Yumi (Division of Foreign Studies, Graduate School of Humanities), the participants learned about the common points and diversity of the Muslim world.
Facilitated by the university students, the participating high school students were divided into 6 groups of 6 students to identify issues, reorganize main points, and conduct research.
The students made presentations on a wide range of social issues as follows:
- Improving working conditions for technical interns in Japan
- To improve the quality of teachers in Malawi
- Successful education form in the poor living conditions in the ghetto
- Regional disaster prevention community
- Selling SDG bento box lunches
- Remote learning: Supporting learning in further education
Based on the feedback from teachers as judges at the interim presentations on the second day, the students reviewed their research content, preparing for the final presentations on the third day.
In the groupwork on the third day, students strategically researched while discussing based on the feedbacks from teachers so that they could report on the results within a limited time frame.
Following the final presentations, Chief Sustainability Officer OTSUKA Yumi of Toyota Motor Corporation delivered a special lecture on leadership factors. Students learned altruism as a component of leadership during discussions on leadership.
On the final day of the program, the award winners were announced and the students received feedbacks from the judges. The group made the presentation entitled "Successful education form in the poor living conditions in the ghetto" got a gold medal and the group made a presentation entitled "Remote learning: Supporting learning in further education” got a silver medal.
This event ended with general comments from OSIPP Dean NAKAJIMA Hiroo.
