Kickoff Symposium held for the Project to Develop Professionals to Provide Life-saving Medical Aid

Osaka University held a kickoff symposium for the Project to Develop Professionals to Provide Life-saving Medical Aid at the Icho Kaikan on the Suita Campus on July 30, 2024.

This project was started from AY2023 to promote the development of professionals in determining causes of death with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) management expense grant (expenses to accelerate the achievement of a mission).

This symposium was held to inform this project and share the thoughts on the necessity of determining causes of death and the development of forensic pathologists.

The symposium began with opening remarks from Dr. KUMANOGOH Atsushi, Dean, Graduate School of Medicine, the following speakers gave speeches.

  • Dr. TANAKA Toshihiro, Senior Executive Vice President, Osaka University
  • Mr. TAWARA Koji, Director, Medical Education Division, Higher Education Bureau, MEXT
  • Mr. NISHIJIMA Yasuhiro, Director, Medial Affairs Division, Health Policy Bureau, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW); Counsellor, Secretariat of the Headquarters for Policy on Determination of Cause of Death
  • Ms. KOBA Ai, Chief, Mother and Child Health Division, Children and Families Agency

Then, in the keynote speeches, the following people spoke about knowledge to save lives based on their wide range of activities.

  • Mr. HOSHINO Toshiya, Inspector, Joint Inspection Unit
  • Dr. IKEGAMI Kiyoko, Chair of the Board of Plan International Japan
  • Dr. Wilson Milton Were, Medical Officer, Child Health Services at the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (MCA), World Health Organization (WHO)

After that, Dr. MATSUMOTO Hiroshi, Director, Education and Research Institute for Death Control and Prevention (iDeaC) explained about the project.

Later, under the theme of “To Save Lives through a Better Understanding of the Causes of Death,” the following panels presented topics to have a panel discussion.

  • Dr. ITAKURA Atsuo, Professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Juntendo University (recommended by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology)
  • Dr. SAKATA Yasushi, Professor, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University (who was recommended by The Japanese Circulation Society)
  • Mr. NUMAGUCHI Atsushi, Director, Emergency & Medical Intensive Care Unit, Nagoya University Hospital
  • Mr. TAHARA Katsushi, Executive Director, Japan Medical Safety Research Organization
  • Mr. NISHIJIMA Yasuhiro, Secretariat of the Headquarters for Policy on Determination of Cause of Death
  • Dr. TSUTSUMI Yasuo, Professor, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences raised questions, and had active discussions about investigation into causes of death necessary to save lives.

The symposium ended with closing remarks by Dr. NONOMURA Norio, Director of Osaka University Hospital. Following the symposium, many participants interacted each other in a meeting, building new networks.
