President Nishio attends the 53rd Japan Industrial Technology Award Ceremony
In March 2024, a high-performance computing platform, which was developed by a consortium of research partners including Osaka University, won the Prime Minister Award, the highest honor, at the 53rd Japan Industrial Technology Awards (established by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun newspaper) and on April 3, the award ceremony was held at Keidanren Kaikan in Tokyo, where President NISHIO Shojiro received the award.
The consortium, including RIKEN, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Osaka University, Fujitsu Limited, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), developed Japan’s first superconducting quantum computer and unveiled it in March 2023.
Based on the technology of the first quantum computer, RIKEN and Fujitsu jointly developed a new 64 qubit superconducting quantum computer and revealed the launch of a platform for quantum computing, which uses the 64 qubit superconducting quantum computer and 40 qubit quantum computer simulators, on the cloud in October 2023 for the purpose of promoting the use of the quantum computer for R&D in the industry.

The quantum computer in operation at the Osaka University Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology (QIQB) will be open to the public on Friday, May 3 during the Icho Festival to be held from May 2~3. Details will be posted to Osaka University’s official website and the QIQB website once they have been finalized.
