Find out about the former Osaka University Hospital on the interpretive sign in Nakanoshima Historic Trail
On the beautiful autumn afternoon of October 10, 2023, the unveiling ceremony for an interpretive sign in the Nakanoshima historic trail was held at the Asahi Broadcasting Group Holdings Corporation, with OU President NISHIO Shojiro and Osaka University Hospital Director TAKEHARA Tetsuo in attendance. Some buildings in the Nakanoshima area, including former Osaka University Hospital, together with their historical information are described on the sign.
Osaka University Hospital was previously located at the location where this sign was set up. Until the hospital's relocation to Suita in August 1993, it offered advanced, high-quality medical care in Nakanoshima for many years and was familiar to citizens as a symbol of Osaka.
Currently, at Osaka University Hospital in Suita, as a core hospital for developing medicine and medical care in Japan, a brand-new integrated medical care building to provide advanced medical care is being constructed toward the opening in 2025. Osaka University Hospital will continue to provide high quality medical care and contribute to the development of medical professionals and medical treatment.
This interpretive display next to the monument commemorating the birthplace of FUKUZAWA Yukichi is on the south side of the Asahi Broadcasting building facing the Dojima River. The history of the former hospital is described with valuable photos of the past, so please view it when you visit Nakanoshima.

Osaka University Nakanoshima Center stands on the other side of Dojima River in front of the interpretive sign. It reopened on April 1, 2023 after a renovation to improve its function as a project to commemorate Osaka University’s 90th and Osaka University of Foreign Studies’ 100th anniversary.
Osaka University will make efforts to develop this hub in Nakanoshima (the birthplace of the university) into a gateway to globally connect and disseminate four domains of knowledge (culture, art, science, and technology) through society-university co-creation and industry-university co-creation.
