On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, Osaka University held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Infectious Disease Education and Research Building (temporary name) for The Nippon Foundation–Osaka University Infectious Disease Response Project, which was announced in December 2021.
The building is moving toward construction and is expected to be completed in February 2025.
This building, designed by ANDO Tadao, an internationally renowned Japanese architect, is expected to be a landmark building at OU. The building aims to be a center for research in infectious disease and development of health professionals where knowledge and professionals in infectious disease will be mobilized from OU, research institutes, and industry in and outside of Japan.
Making use of diversity at the comprehensive research university, Osaka University will take the initiative in promoting open innovation with domestic and international research institutes and industry. The university will work so hard to solve social issues through the dissemination of reliable information based on scientific evidence, the establishment of an infectious disease research base, and the development of human resources for health.
After the ceremony, Osaka University President Nishio expressed his determination to make this center a place to embody the university’s motto of “Live Locally, Grow Globally.” Loved by people as a symbol of Osaka, Kansai, and eventually Japan, this facility will lead infectious disease research on the world stage and spread its wings around the world as Spaceship Earth.
Mr. Ando, who worked on the concept design of the building, expressed his hope that this building will be an international research center that brings together top-level researchers from around the world.
