Policymakers in Quantum Technology visit the Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology

On Thursday, June 22, policymakers in quantum technology from four government organizations (Cabinet Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) visited the Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology (QIQB) at Osaka University.

Following the outlining of the current state of research at QIQB by Director KITAGAWA Masahiro, the policymakers talked with center staff about the development of talent for quantum technology and future prospects of universities.

Next, taking a look at superconducting quantum computing hardware and learning about its mechanisms from Vice Director NEGORO Makoto, the policymakers exchanged opinions with staff about the current state and challenges regarding development of a quantum computer in Japan.

Finally, the group inspected facilities, such as an ion trapping apparatus as well as experimental equipment for quantum networks, quantum optics, and ultracold atoms. Learning about these facilities from Professor TOYODA Kenji and Specially Appointed Associate Professor YAMASHITA Makoto, respectively, the policymakers had a lively discussion about future R&D plans.

The Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology consists of six research groups: Quantum Computing, Quantum Information Fusion, Quantum Information Devices, Quantum Communications and Security, Quantum Measurement and Sensing, and Quantum Biology, promoting research in each field and transdisciplinary research among these fields as well as other academic fields.

The center, as an international research hub for quantum innovations, promotes international academic exchanges and takes a key role in human resources development to social implementation. (Source: https://qiqb.osaka-u.ac.jp/en/about-us/)
