OU designated as a core vaccine development center by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED)

OU’s grant proposal for a "vaccine development center based on the understanding host-microbe interactions” was selected as a synergy center in the Project to Establish World-Class Centers for Vaccine Research and Development funded by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), which had called for project proposals based on the Strategy for Strengthening Vaccine Development and Production Systems approved in a Cabinet meeting in June 2021.

At this vaccine development center, under a consistent research system from research to vaccine development, researchers will perform human immunological research, including analysis of mechanisms of priority infectious diseases caused by viruses as well as studies of immune responses to pathogens using human specimens. Based on the results of this research, they will develop modalities (such as mRNA and peptides)-based vaccines for priority infectious diseases. However, in the case of a pandemic, the center will contribute to the national initiative to accelerate development of a safe and effective vaccine.
