The Graduate School of Humanities will open in April 2022

On April 1, 2022, Osaka University will merge its Graduate School of Letters and Graduate School of Language and Culture into the Graduate School of Humanities, which will have 5 majors: Humanities, Language and Culture Studies, Foreign Studies, Japan Studies, and Art.

In addition to the characteristic programs in these five majors, an interdisciplinary knowledge organization called Jinbun Gakurin [lit. "Humanities Education Facility"] will be established as an academic matrix. All faculty members and students from the 5 majors are arranged in this academic matrix, a 3 × 4 square grid comprised of three rows of academic fields and 4 columns of geographical areas for a total of 12 combinations of academic fields. This arrangement of faculty members will be open to the world via the internet to serve as a platform for research and education beyond borders of majors.

In an age in which the role of humanities is changing, this new graduate school will provide a place of interdisciplinary learning in academic fields of study, such as history, literature, language and culture, sociology, and art, developing researchers and highly-skilled professionals that will promote mutual international understanding.
