Osaka University only university to receive top “gold” rating in the PRIDE INDEX 2019, along with a 3-star rating in Osaka City’s certification system!

On October 11, 2019, Osaka University became the first university to receive a perfect score of 5 out of 5 on PRIDE INDEX 2019. The PRIDE INDEX was established by work with Pride, a group that supports the promotion and establishment of diversity management for sexual minorities (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)) in workplace. The index evaluates endeavors regarding LGBT, earning the university the distinction of a “gold” rating.

Under the “Declaration of Gender Equality at Osaka University” in April of 2016 and the “Osaka University Basic Policy Regarding Diversity in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI)” in July of 2017, Osaka University has been involved in various activities to protect the rights of sexual minorities on campus, including allowing use of common names, creating and spreading inclusive restroom signage, intensifying activities to raise awareness for LGBT and, supporting victims of harassment by providing consultation services.

Upon receiving this distinction, President NISHIO Shojiro announced OU’s mission statement for creating innovation through diversity, expressing his determination to further promote the university’s policies and activity.

Prior to this, Osaka University received three-star certification in the Osaka City LGBT Leading Company Certification System, the highest possible designation, on October 10, 2019. In this system, performances receive one-star to three-star certifications based on the number of efforts that comply with certification criteria. Osaka City certifies corporations that lead the way in promoting activity to resolve issues faced by members of sexual minority groups, giving Osaka University the three-star certification.

Osaka University will make efforts so that each and every member of the university can unleash their maximum potential by placing an emphasis on diversity and engaging in activity to become a world-class innovative university that contributes to social change.
