Award ceremony held for the Sumitomo Chemical Scholarship for Information-Communication Technology Professionals

In light of a recent decrease in doctoral students and a possible resulting decline in Japan’s scientific and technological capabilities, the Osaka University Career Center discussed future human resource development with Sumitomo Chemical Company, Limited. As an outcome of this discussion, the Sumitomo Chemical Scholarship for Information-Communication Technology Professionals was established to encourage outstanding students to enter doctoral programs. The honorees receive a 100,000 yen award a month for a maximum of 36 months (a total of 3.6 million yen).

In 2019, two graduate students have been selected from the Programs for Leading Graduate Schools (namely, the Humanware Innovation Program and Interactive Materials Science Cadet) as the first scholarship recipient:

• OZAWA Makoto (1st year doctoral student, Department of Mechanical Science and Bioengineering, Graduate School of Engineering Science/Osaka University Humanware Innovation Program)

• TERANISHI Shingo (2nd year doctoral student, Department of Materials Engineering Science, Graduate School of Engineering Science/Osaka University Interactive Materials Science Cadet).

On Tuesday, July 9, 2019, the award ceremony for the Sumitomo Chemical Scholarship for Information-Communication Technology Professionals was held at RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka. After a greeting from ODA Yoshiaki (Managing Executive Officer, Sumitomo Chemical), the scholarship was awarded to the students. Following a congratulatory address by Osaka University Vice President and Career Center Director KURIMOTO Eisei , the two student awardees gave speeches. At a social gathering following the award ceremony, the student awardees exchanged information with related individuals.
