Osaka University ranked 1st in Japan and 11th in the world in number of international patent applications for an educational institution!

Osaka University was ranked 1st in Japan and 11th in the world (up from 4th and 23rd respectively in 2017) in number of international patent applications for an educational institution in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s 2018 rankings.

Since the 2017-2018 academic year, Osaka University has aimed for further promotion of industry-university co-creation. By promoting technology transfer for new industries and the creation of innovation as well as actively propagating information overseas to develop global technology transfer activity, the university has seen an increase in its international patent applications, up 40% from the previous year.

In "Nature Index 2017 Innovation," which ranks academic institutions on their contribution to innovation based on data analysis regarding research thesis references in patents, Osaka University has also earned Japan’s top spot. OU has had a significant influence on the creation of innovation through its large number of research results that have led to patents. Also, in Reuter’s "The World's Most Innovative Universities 2018" ranking, Osaka University earned the 2nd highest ranking in Japan, just behind The University of Tokyo.
