The Ikushi Prize was established to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's accession to the imperial throne through an imperial donation to support and encourage young researchers who continue their work despite severe economic conditions. This award was established in 2010 in order to raise the motivation of and develop outstanding students in doctoral courses who are expected to contribute to the development of Japan's academic research in the future.

The award ceremony took place at The Japan Academy (Tokyo) on Tuesday, March 6, 2018.
