AEARU Advanced Materials Science Workshop 2017 held

On Wednesday, November 1 and Thursday, November 2, 2017, the AEARU Advanced Materials Science Workshop 2017 was held on Osaka University’s Suita Campus. This workshop serves as a part of activity by the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU), of which Osaka University is a member. It was held for students of AEARU member universities, with over 50 students, faculty, and staff from Japan and overseas in attendance.

On the first day of the workshop, 10 prominent lecturers from both Japan and overseas were invited to speak on the 4 topics of the workshop: (1) Functional Materials, (2) Structural Materials, (3) Biomaterials, and (4) Materials Informatics. Because the topics were split into 4 fields, participating students mentioned that “it was a great opportunity to not only expand knowledge in my own field of research, but also to learn about other fields.” In addition, participants actively asked questions in the Q&A session, making for a meaningful experience in which students were able to interact with prominent lecturers.

On the second day, participants visited Daikin Co.’s Technology Innovation Center, located in Settsu, Osaka. By visiting the Keihatsu-kan , which delves into the history of Daikin, and “Open Lab,” at which some of the world’s most advanced technology is on display. The high level of Japanese technology left a huge impression on participants, who also had an active discussion with members of Daikin. After the corporate tour, participants went on a tour of Osaka Castle and the Namba area, deepening connections with each other while learning about the history and culture of Osaka.
