The 19th Academic Exchange Seminar between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University held

The 19th Academic Exchange Seminar between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University was held from Thursday, September 21st through Friday, September 22nd, 2017. Academic exchange seminars between these two universities have been alternately held since 1995 in accordance with their bilateral academic exchange agreement.

Sixteen individuals were in attendance from Osaka University, including President NISHIO Shojiro, Executive Vice President KAWAHARA Genta, Executive Vice President OGAWA Tetsuo, Graduate School of Science Dean TAJIMA Setsuko, and Institute of Laser Engineering Director KODAMA Ryousuke, as well as 16 individuals from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, including President Lin Zhongqin and Institute of Natural Sciences Dean Jing Yipeng.

At this seminar, talks were held on substantial exchange in joint doctoral education in the 3 fields covered at last year's seminar: materials and welding, information, and physics/lasers. In addition, the signing ceremony for the Double Degree Program established between the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University and the School of Physics and Astronomy at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a result of last year's seminar, was held.

On the 21st, President Nishio met with President Lin, and the two presidents had a discussion that reaffirmed the importance of the partnership between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, as well as their commitment to further enhance collaboration between the two universities by expanding the fields for joint doctoral education.

President Nishio also met with Vice President Zhang Ansheng to speak about possible unique collaborations between the two universities, located in the sister cities of Osaka and Shanghai.

On the afternoon of the 21st, President Nishio gave a lecture entitled "A new evolutionary model for universities―co-creation for innovation with society and for society" for students, faculty, and staff of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Students actively participated in the question and answer session following the lecture, making for lively exchange.

On the 22nd, participants discussed endeavors in doctoral joint education and research, including the Double Degree Programs agreement, in sectoral groups.

The Academic Exchange Seminars between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University over 20 years have fostered their friendly relationship, providing a crucial foundation for strengthening their collaboration. These seminars will further develop their academic exchange in the future.
