11 OU professors win 2016 Commendation for Science and Technology
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced the recipients of the 2016 Commendations for Science and Technology. From Osaka University, eleven faculty members (including one professor emeritus) received awards. Seven faculty members were awarded Prizes for Science and Technology commending them on outstanding performance; four were awarded Young Scientists' Prizes commending them on their ability to develop advanced research.

- KATOH Naomi (Professor emeritus, Osaka University) -- Development of an autonomous undersea robot for seafloor cable inspection
- SEKIGUCHI Kiyotoshi (Professor, Institute for Protein Research) -- Development of substratum for human ES/iPS cell culture
Prizes for Science and Technology (Research Category)
- FUJII Hidetoshi (Professor, Joining and Welding Research Institute) -- Research regarding new low temperature welding technology utilizing the friction stir phenomenon
- MIYANAGA Noriaki (Professor, Institute of Laser Engineering) -- Research and development of an advanced petawatt glass laser

- SAITO Takahiro (Professor, Office of Management and Planning) -- Increasing awareness in elementary school students through science education using programming

- TSURUGI Hayato (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering Science) -- Research regarding preceding cycle transition metal catalysts enabling innovative transformation of organic molecules
- HATA Yoshiya (Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Engineering) -- Research regarding the evaluation of the seismic movement in areas affected by large scale earthquakes
- HISATAKE Shintarou (Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Engineering Science) -- Research on high accuracy terahertz measurement based on optical technology
- HORI Yuuichirou (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering) -- Research of design and development of a chemical probe for fluorovisualization of proteins
