A Record-Breaking Turnout for the Osaka University Alumni Reunion in Tokyo

On Saturday, December 5, 2015, the "Osaka University Alumni Reunion in Tokyo" was held on a sunny winter afternoon at Gakushikaikan. This event saw some 550 attendees, including Osaka University and Osaka University of Foreign Studies alumni, with the majority of attendees currently living in the Kanto region of eastern Japan. This gathering of the OU family, which reached record attendee numbers for an alumni event, was held in Tokyo to keep those alumni living in the Kanto region up-to-date on current events at the university.

In the ceremony and lecture held during the first part of the Reunion, Osaka University President Shojiro NISHIO gave a speech on current events at Osaka University, 12th President of Osaka University and Director of the Osaka University Federation of Alumni Associations Nobuaki KUMAGAI greeted attendees, and Representative of the Kanto/Tokyo Branch of the Federation of Alumni Associations Hiromasa IKEDA (Director, Tokyo Branch,Osaka University Engineering Society) gave a report on recent activities.

Following this, Osaka University Distinguished Professor Hiroshi ISHIGURO (Graduate School of Engineering Science) gave a lecture entitled "Robots and Future Society." This was an exciting lecture covering everything from the latest research results to the shape of the future of humans, and the full house was seen intently listening to every word.

The social gathering in the first part of the Reunion was kicked off with a toast by Kazuya NISHIHATA (Director, Osaka University School of Law Alumni Association Seiunkai ). For this Reunion, a special invitation was sent to those alumni celebrating their 15th, 16th, or 17th year since graduation, filling the room with the joy of reuniting with old friends from and having friendly conversation.

After an activity report by Ranatunga Vijitha (2007 graduate, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology; Chair, Osaka University International Alumni Association) as well as songs and performances by current and past members of the Osaka University Cheerleading Party, Professor ISHIGURO surprised attendees with a drawing for his communication media cushion "Hugvie." An enjoyable time was had by all thanks not in small part to MC Megumi KUNO (2015 graduate, Graduate School of Economics).

We would like to give our sincerest thanks for the large turnout. We plan on holding the Osaka University Alumni Reunion in Tokyo again next year at around the same time. Also planned for next year are Homecoming Day on the Toyonaka Campus in May, and, for the first time outside of Osaka and Tokyo, the Osaka University Alumni Reunion in Okayama, which is planned to be held in August. More details will be provided on the Osaka University Official Homepage at a later date. We look forward to seeing you all at more events in the future!
