“Finding potential in your own path: Past experiences fuel success, even after major career shift”
Ms. Eunice Cheng graduated from the Chemistry - Biology Combined Major Program at Osaka University in 2021 and continued her studies at the University of Oxford in the UK, where she pursued a master's degree in Clinical and Therapeutic Neuroscience. Upon graduating in November 2022, she decided to embark on a new path and embrace new challenges. In January 2023, Ms. Cheng joined MUFG Hong Kong as an Assistant Relationship Manager in the Japanese Corporate Banking Department, where she has been working for almost two years now.
How did you envision your future when studying at Osaka University?
While studying at Osaka University, I once spoke with a senior from Hong Kong who advised me to not to limit myself to my major. He emphasized the importance of always being open to trying new things as long as we continue to learn, which had a profound impact on me. From that moment on, I developed a desire to explore different lifestyles and embrace new challenges in various places and countries.
What are your responsibilities at MUFG? What about your prospects for the future?
I currently work at MUFG HK as an Assistant Relationship Manager, where my primary responsibility is to collaborate with my team to establish and develop business relationships with both existing and new clients. These clients are primarily Japanese corporate customers, and my team and I promote various banking products and services tailored to their diverse needs. We also act as problem solvers for our clients, preparing to address any requests to enhance their banking experience.
The role is challenging, and I recognizes that I have much to learn. I aspire to become an independent Relationship Manager, so I am currently participating in various training programs at MUFG HK to further my development.
How does the study or experiences earned at Osaka University help you commit to your work?
Although my current job is in a completely different field from my major, my past experiences have equipped me with flexibility and efficiency, which have greatly benefitted my work. For example, during my time at Osaka University, I had to conduct organic chemistry experiments within a tight time limit. This required meticulous planning for each step of the experiment and the ability to execute procedures efficiently under pressure. Since starting my current role, I have found that these skills are invaluable when handling urgent customer requests. I can remain calm and neatly organize my approach, a capability that I attribute to the training I received at Osaka University.
What do you wish to achieve through your work or your life in general?
I wish to achieve continuous personal growth and learning throughout my life. I believe that each experience, whether positive or negative, related to your work/study or not, can teach us something valuable. By pursuing diverse opportunities in my work and studies, I hope to expand my knowledge and skills, ultimately becoming a well-rounded individual who can contribute positively to society.
A Message to OU students to “Grow Globally”
Don’t let anything limit your potential. It may require a great deal of courage to face challenges in a completely new country or in a field you've never explored before. However, you’ll find that it’s not as daunting as it seems once you take that first step. As long as you work hard and remain open-minded to learning, your past experiences and the knowledge you gain will provide you with the strength needed to overcome any obstacles. I sincerely hope that everyone can pursue their dreams in the future.
