Support Programs for Osaka University Students studying abroad

If you want to "do something" while you are a student, why not study abroad?

Osaka University supports overseas study by promoting various programs including an overseas program designed to provide credits from universities with exchange agreements with Osaka University. It's urgent that Japan develop professionals able to function on the international scene so that Japan will continue to play an important role in international society. To that end, the importance not only of studying abroad and involving oneself in education and research in another country, but also of experiencing a different culture while enhancing one's proficiency in a foreign language cannot be understated.

Osaka University Aid for Student Exchange Programs 

This International Exchange Program is for full-time students of schools and graduate schools of Osaka University. Students in this program are given the chance to study and conduct research at overseas universities with student exchange agreements with Osaka University for one semester or longer--up to a maximum of one year. These exchange agreement specify that students enrolled in their home university are not charged tuition fees at the overseas university; they receive the status of a student at that university and the credits earned are transferable to their home university.

The student exchange agreements are of two types: university-to-university and school-to-school. The recruitment of students wishing to join such student exchange programs is conducted during the periods listed below. For school-to-school exchange programs, please contact the school of your choice.

Short-term language study programs

University of York Summer Language Study Program  

  • International exchange subject: Experiencing the Cultural Environment of the UK

The program for the 2021-2022 academic year has been cancelled. 

This is an English Study Program in which students study at University of York, UK for five weeks, from the end of August to the end of September. This is an ideal program for those wishing to learn academic English and take the English ability test IELTS in the UK.

Moreover, participants who successfully complete the basic course "Experiencing the Cultural Environment of the UK" as outlined in the syllabus can receive academic credit based on the grade they receive.

Enderun College Summer Language Study Program

  • International exchange subject: Experiencing the Cultural Environment of the Philippines

Applications for the 2021-22 academic year are no longer being accepted. (The program will be held online in the 2021-22 academic year.)

This is an English Study Program in which students study at Enderun College, The Philippines for five weeks, from the end of August to the end of September. This program is primarily held in a one-on-one format, with some group lessons included as well. The content of the program is catered to each students' individual level and is best suited for students who are studying abroad for the first time and students who are looking for intensive English study,

Moreover, participants who successfully complete the basic course "Experiencing the Cultural Environment of the Philippines" as outlined in the syllabus can receive academic credit based on the grade they receive.

Flinders University Summer Language Study Program

  • International exchange subject: Experiencing the Cultural Environment of Australia

Applications for the 2021-22 academic year are no longer being accepted. (The program will be held online in the 2021-22 academic year.)

This is an English Study Program in which students study at Flinders University, Australia for five weeks, from the end of August to the end of September. This course has students taking intensive group lessons to develop the four basic language skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing) and is best suited for students who wish to seriously study the English language as well as those who wish to raise their language test scores.

Moreover, participants who successfully complete the basic course "Experiencing the Cultural Environment of Australia" as outlined in the syllabus can receive academic credit based on the grade they receive.

Thompson Rivers University Summer Language Study Program

Applications for the 2021-22 academic year are no longer being accepted. (The program for the 2021-22 academic year will be held online.)

This is an English Study Program in which students study online at Thompson Rivers University, Canada for three weeks, from early to late August. This program allows students to study General English while learning more about the culture of Canada in group sessions. This course is best suited for intermediate-level students who wish to undergo intensive English study.

Mahidol University Summer Language Study Program

The program for the 2021-2022 academic year has been cancelled.

This is an English Study Program in which students study online at Mahidol University, Thailand (a university with which Osaka University has a student exchange agreement) for five weeks, from late August to late September. This program allows students to study General English while learning more about the culture of Thailand. This course is best suited for students who are studying abroad for the first time as well as students who wish to learn about Thai culture.

Monash University Spring Language Study Program

  • International exchange subject: Experiencing the Cultural Environment of Australia

Applications for the 2020-2021 academic year are no longer being accepted. (This program will be held online during the 2020-2021 academic year.)

This is an English Study Program in which students study at Monash University, Australia, for 4 weeks, from February to March. This is a program for those wishing to learn academic English, a great way for preparing for subsequent long-term study abroad.

Moreover, participants who successfully complete the basic course "Experiencing the Cultural Environment of Australia" as outlined in the syllabus can receive academic credit based on the grade they receive.

Campus France Spring Language Study Program

The program for the 2021-2022 academic year has been cancelled.

This is a short-term language study program held at partner universities of Campus France.

The 2019-2020 Spring Language Study Program will be held at one of the following 2 universities.

1) Linguistics and Civilizations International Center, le CILEC Saint-Etienne
2) French Language Education Center, le CUEF de Grenoble

The period of study for this program will be from Monday, February 24 ~ Friday, March 20, 2020.

In order to expand and strengthen the French language ability of the students enrolled in the program, the curriculum is designed to meet the needs, goals, and interests of the students through strengthening the ability to express and understand in the language as well as use grammar and vocabulary to respond to various situations. In order for students to be able to learn about the history and culture of France, various advertisements, articles from the media, videos, and literary works will be used in class, creating a classroom environment focused on communication through various means of language application.

UN Youth Volunteers Program

*Applications for the 2021-22 Academic Year are no longer being accepted.

The UN Youth Volunteers Program is a program which dispatches undergraduate student volunteers to developing nations in a collaboration between the UN Volunteers Project and a consortium of 9 Japanese universities*. The length of service is about 5 months, and students take part in activities according to their work instructions in a number of areas such as information and communication technology (ICT), education, the environment, and health and safety with the UN, government agencies, NGO staff, and local individuals.

Past dispatch locations:

2019-2020: Zambia, Zimbabwe (2 students)

2018-2019: Indonesia (1 student)

2017-2018: Indonesia, Fiji (2 students)
