Shared House
About Shared House
Merits
- Fully-furnished with home appliances and no disposal of them required when moving out.
- No security deposit, key money, or guarantor required in some cases.
- Short stay such as 1 month or 3 months often available.
- Internet access such as wireless LAN available.
- Utilities such as gas and electricity included.
Demerits
- You may feel stressed by differences in living hours and lifestyles with other residents (wake-up time, bedtime, disposal of garbage and cleaning methods, etc.).
- You may not be able to use common areas at any time (a kitchen, a laundry room, and a shower room, etc.).
- Your friends may not be allowed to visit (depending on shared houses).
- A bunch of small differences may turn into big troubles.
Student voices
- It was good that staying with other residents made my uneasiness for living alone disappeared.
- I could make friends with various people because the shared house where I had stayed often provided us exchange events.
- The common areas were kept cleaned by the management company.
- I was reassured to receive much support when I got sick.
- There were many exchange events, so I could not spend time quietly.
- I had a problem with a resident and could not solve it, so I had to move out.
- It was stressful that residents did not understand the differences in culture and religion.
Points to notice
- Contract renewal can be difficult compared with ordinary private apartments. You usually conclude a lease contract when renting a private apartment, but you conclude a term-fixed lease contract for living in a shared house. For example, you cannot re-contract without a consent of a landlord when you have lived in a shared house for 3 months and want to extend your stay there for another 3 months. In principle, you cannot cancel the lease contract halfway, and the rent cannot be refunded when moving out (depending on the contract details).
- In a shared house with many short-term residents, the living environment may significantly change when new residents move in. Since you cannot pick your residents, the human relationship with them may suddenly get worse, which may make you feel like leaving there.
- There are various types of shared houses; therefore, you should be careful to select one of them and confirm the details such as frequency of exchange events and the support system by the management company (e.g., frequency of visit and cleaning of common areas, etc.). Please read the contract details carefully and take advice of the residents into account as well. It is important to choose an environment close to the lifestyle you want.
