Apartment Moving Out Procedures

Please refer to “Move-Out” under the “Procedures Regarding Apartments.”

Other Procedures

1. National Health Insurance

Once your return flight has been booked and your return date has been confirmed, you or someone on your behalf must go to the National Health Insurance Office at your city hall with your insurance card. If you show your return date written in the email of your flight confirmation, then the expiration date on your health insurance card will be changed to your return date. You do not need to return your health insurance card. An invoice for the difference incurred up to the day of your return will be issued, which you must pay in cash on the same day.

Please note that insurance premiums must be paid monthly and cannot be prorated.
For instance, even if you depart on August 2, you will be required to pay the full amount for August.

2. Closing Your Bank Account

Go to your bank or Japan Post Bank, then request to close your account. If you pay your utility bills by automatic withdrawal from your account, please make sure that the bills have been settled before closing your account. If you have been receiving scholarships or salaries into the account, please confirm that the final transfer has been received before closing your account.

≪Required documents≫

  1. Identification documents such as your residence card and passport
  2. The registered seal at the time of opening your account (if you registered your seal)
  3. Passbook

≪Business hours≫

  • Banks: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Japan Post Bank: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

3. Residence Card

You will have to return it at the airport, so make sure to carry it with you instead of keeping it in your hand luggage. When leaving Japan, you will be asked to return your Residence Card to the immigration officer at the port of entry/departure (e.g., Kansai International Airport).

4. Other (Mobile Phone, PC Provider, Electricity, Gas, etc.)

If you have contracts with mobile phones, PC providers, electricity, gas, etc., you must cancel them before returning to your home country, at which time you will need to confirm the final payment.
