Off Campus Housing

■ Apartments (Private Housing)

When renting private housing in Japan, it is common to go through a real estate agency.

If this is your first time renting, we recommend consulting with someone in your department or with a Japanese friend, or asking them to accompany you, as there are some rental practices unique to Japan. To avoid issues after moving in, be sure to carefully check the condition of the property and fully understand the terms of the contract before signing.

The MY ROOM service offered by The University of Osaka Co-op has an office on campus and handles many apartments near the campus. Support is available in English, and you can even search for a room before arriving in Japan.

The Support Office has a list of off-campus real estate agencies that offer English-language support. Please contact the Support Office for more information.

■ Privately-Run Dormitories and Share Houses

There are many privately-run student dormitories and share houses in Osaka.
Since most of these facilities do not offer English-language support, we recommend asking a Japanese friend to accompany you.

When looking for a share house, it is important to choose an environment that closely matches your desired lifestyle by carefully reading the contract and talking with current or former residents. Note that in some cases, early termination of the contract may not be allowed, and relationships with other residents can sometimes become strained.
