Activities carried out under the cross-appointment system for Winter Term 2018-2019

Specially Appointed Professor Fumiko Tajima (geophysics) of the University of California, Irvine taught at Osaka University as part of the Osaka University Cross Appointment System in December of 2018.

During her stay, Dr. Tajima taught a lecture series entitled “Earthquake Science” in the “Frontier Lectures from University of California II” course. She tailored the content of her lectures so that many OU students could participate, regardless of specialty or field. As a result, participants responded positively to the lectures, saying, “Being able to learn about new things and new fields of study in English was really exciting” and “I’m glad I was able to learn about difference aspects of earthquakes.”

A seminar entitled “The Science and Engineering of Earthquakes” was held in the Graduate School of Engineering, at which Dr. Tajima held a lecture on her specialty of seismology entitled “The Science of Earthquakes in the Past Half-Century.” Later, the research conducted by Associate Professor Hirono (Graduate School of Science), Assistant Professor Shimoda (Graduate School of Engineering), and Associate Professor Kawabe (Graduate School of Engineering) was introduced.

Following this, Dr. Tajima participated in a meeting regarding international exchange along with faculty members from the Graduate School of Science and global outreach staff from the Graduate School of Engineering.

She also participated in a meeting with the Steering Committee for Promoting Academic Exchange between Osaka University and the University of California, stating her opinions about fostering a relationship between Osaka University and UC in the future.

Many students and faculty members were inspired and motivated through meeting and interacting with Dr. Tajima, making for a very valuable experience for all involved. OU expects that academic exchange between faculty members at Osaka University and the University of California will continue to develop under the Cross-Appointment System.
