Shanghai Ranking
Shanghai Ranking is the collective name for a group of university rankings published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. It enables the international comparison of research performance across universities through various rankings, most notably the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and subject-specific rankings.
A notable characteristic of ARWU is that it determines university rankings using objective indicators derived from publicly available data rather than reputation surveys. Universities are evaluated primarily on their research achievements, research impact, and major academic awards. Key metrics include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, and articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI).
