Mid-Term Goals and Basic Policies in Energy Management at Osaka University

February 2021

By 2030, Osaka University aims to reduce its energy consumption by 26% or more when compared with 2013 by annually reducing energy consumption rate* by 1% or more, as well as its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent or more.

*Energy consumption rate: Energy Consumption/total floor area (unit: J/m2)

Note: If any changes are made to the goals listed in Japan’s Plan for Global Warming Countermeasures, the Mid-Term Goals described above will be altered accordingly after due consideration.

In order to achieve its Mid-Term Goals, Osaka University will:

1. Make efforts to reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to achieve its Mid-Term Goals, while complying with laws and ordinances relating to environmental impact of the university’s activities.

2. Devise unique plans that are effective in reducing its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions as well as promoting its academic, research, and social contribution.

3. Develop and, through mutual cooperation among OU community members, implement a plan to reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while securing favorable environments for education, research, and work.

4. Consider reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from the stages of planning, design, and construction of buildings in terms of their construction, expansion, renovation, and other large-scale improvements in order to meet ZEB (net zero energy building) standards .

5. Endeavor to reduce its environmental burden through co-creation with on campus research institutes in the fields of environmental and energy studies and local authorities while using its campuses as "Innovation Commons."

6. Improve its system for securing necessary funds to promote the reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
