“Japan’s Untapped Potential – Taking Advantage of its Thinning Population” will be held as the first seminar in the 2019 Initiative for the Implementation of the Diversity Research Environment (Collaboration Type).
Overview
Osaka University was selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Initiative for the Implementation of the Diversity Research Environment (Collaboration Type), and in cooperation with the National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition (NIBIOHN) and Daikin Industries, Ltd., the university is engaged in developing the female researchers that will serve as the foundation of a diverse research environment as well as promoting diversity that will extend into the local community.
As part of these endeavors, we’ve invited MURAKAMI Yumiko, the first Japanese female and first individual from a private corporation to become head of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Tokyo Centre, to speak to us. More details are listed below.

Lecture overview
Japan placed 110 th out of 149 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2018, showing a lack of gender equality. However, in OECD’s Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competences (PIAAC), Japanese women placed first in reading comprehensive and mathematical thinking ability in adult women among 24 nations surveyed, displaying their top-level ability.
Ms. Murakami will speak about how Japan will promote the participation of women, human resources with untapped potential, and take advantage of its shrinking population from a broad perspective.
