タイトル: Night science: the creative side of the scientific process

講演者:Itai Yanai, Ph.D.

Scientific Director of Applied Bioinformatics Laboratories,
Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology,
New York University,
Co-Host of the Night Science Podcast

In this talk we will ask 'Where do ideas come from?'. What we call the scientific method tells us what to do once we have a hypothesis ‒ thatʼs 'day science' as Francois Jacob called it. But where do ideas and hypotheses come from in the first place? Jacob famously called this part the realm of ʻnight scienceʼ and I will describe how ‒ together with Martin Lercher ‒ we developed a course to teach aspects of the ʻCreative Scientific Processʼ, including generating hypotheses using improvisational discussions, interdisciplinarity, metaphorical language, questions from contradictions, puzzle-switching, and a general approach of openness to new ideas.
