Award ceremony held for the Sumitomo Chemical Scholarship for Information-Communication Technology Professionals

In light of a recent decrease in doctoral students and a possible resulting decline in Japan’s scientific and technological capabilities, the Osaka University Career Center discussed future human resource development with Sumitomo Chemical Company, Limited. As an outcome of this discussion, the Sumitomo Chemical Scholarship for Information-Communication Technology Professionals was established to encourage outstanding students to enter doctoral programs. The honorees receive a 100,000 yen award a month for a maximum of 36 months (a total of 3.6 million yen).

In 2020, the following two students were selected from two Programs for Leading Graduate Schools:

• Thilina Dissanayake (1 st year doctoral student, Department of Multimedia Engineering, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology/Osaka University Humanware Innovation Program)

• WATANABE Eisuke (1 st year doctoral student, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science/Osaka  University Interactive Materials Science Cadet Program)

On Wednesday, July 29, 2020, the award ceremony for the 2nd Sumitomo Chemical Scholarship for Information-Communication Technology Professionals was held at the Sumitomo Club in Osaka. After a greeting from MIYOSHI Yoshihiro (Managing Executive Officer, Sumitomo Chemical), the scholarship was awarded to the students. Following a congratulatory address by Osaka University Vice President and Career Center Director KURIMOTO Eisei, the two student awardees gave speeches. In addition, the two students chosen to receive last year’s scholarship delivered reports on the progress of their research.

The attendees were wearing masks at the ceremony but removed them for photos.
