To all students: A message from the president

Dear students,

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, Osaka University has been holding online classes since the beginning of the spring term. I am sure that it has been difficult for all of you to cope in these trying times. More than anything, my thoughts are constantly with new students who may be experiencing periods of loneliness.

However, thanks to your patience and cooperation, we are closing in on the end of the summer term. The university would also like to thank you all for following the restrictions that had been placed on extracurricular activities and events.

Though the state-of-emergency declaration has been lifted, the possibility remains that the infection may spread once again. As summer vacation rapidly approaches, I would like all of you to remember to practice proper behavior as students of Osaka University, based on the latest information from the national and local governments as well as information from the university. I also urge you to continue your efforts to prevent the spread of the virus by practicing social distancing, wearing a face mask, and washing your hands.

We must overcome this unprecedented period, this era of COVID-19. But when viewed from a different perspective, this difficult time offers us a chance to reexamine and renew our social norms, as COVID-19 brings us a “new normal.” I encourage all of you to take this opportunity to actively seek out and do everything you possibly can to overcome these challenging times.

I hope this summer will truly be a memorable one for each and every one of you.

NISHIO Shojiro
President, Osaka University
