The 21st Academic Exchange Seminar between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Osaka University

The 21st Academic Exchange Seminar between Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Osaka University was held at Osaka University from Tuesday, November 19 through Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Academic exchange seminars between these two universities have been alternately held since 1995 in accordance with their bilateral academic exchange agreement.

Some 150 individuals participated in this large-scale international seminar. Following a plenary session on the morning of the 19th, on the afternoon of the day and throughout the next day, workshops and facility tours were held in the 6 fields of materials/joining, information, physics/lasers, marine engineering, smart city, and industrial biotechnology, the last of which was newly added for this year's seminar .

During the plenary session on the 19th hosted by East Asian Center for Academic Initiatives Director KOMIZO Yuuichi, OU Executive Vice President for Global Engagement and Student Support KAWAHARA Genta and SJTU Vice President HUANG Zhen greeted attendees. Following this, 5 presenters delivered keynote speeches on the topic of Regional collaboration between industry, government, and university from the perspective of a 'Smart City’."

After Professor SHIMODA Yoshiyuki of the Graduate School of Engineering of Osaka University gave a presentation entitled "Smart Community in Osaka," Professor MA Lizhuang of  SJTU gave a presentation entitled "Big Data and AI Technology with Innovative Cooperation of Industry-University-Research on Smart City."

After this, Andrej Zwitter, Dean of Faculty Campus Friesland, Groningen University, the Netherlands, introduced smart innovation underway at Friesland Campus.

Finally, UEMIZO Norio (Director, Osaka City Planning Bureau, Osaka City) and SHAN Dongming (Deputy Director, Division of Information Technology Application, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Shanghai City) spoke about smart city endeavors in their cities. Each presenter also attended parallel sessions in the afternoon.

Joint Workshop on Smart City

While the seminars were held on the morning of the 20th, SJTU Vice President Huang and Deputy Director Shan talked with President Nishio at another venue. They celebrated 40 years of exchange between the two universities and the 21st holding of this seminar, confirming their intention to continue exchange and collaboration between researchers. President Nishio also told Vice President Huang that OU would welcome the SJTU students’ visit to OU in October 2020. The bilateral pioneering global collaboration will further develop the universities.
