14th Osaka University Homecoming Day held

On Friday, May 3, members of the OU family, including alumni, current students, parents, guardians, and faculty members, attended the 14th Osaka University Homecoming Day.

Announcer OGAWA Mayu (2008 graduate, School of Foreign Studies) served as MC for the event, which began with President NISHIO Shojiro updating on what was going on at the university and was followed by a greeting by KISHIMOTO Tadamitsu (President, Osaka University Federation of Alumni Association) at Osaka University Hall.

Following this, Tomoko Lumpkin (1974 graduate of Osaka University of Foreign Studies), who has worked as a conference interpreter for dignitaries from multiple countries, gave a lecture entitled “Communication Between Different Cultures – Beyond English.” In this lecture, she invited a bit of laughter from the audience with her stories about the White House’s state dinner, after which she spoke about the differences in interpretation between the United States and Europe, the possibilities of AI (artificial intelligence) in interpretation, and proposals for Japan’s English education. Each of these topics came with a number of examples that were easy for the audience to understand, so it was no surprise that attendees listened to her lecture so intently.
Finally, performances by the Osaka University Cheerleading Party fired up the venue and showed a passionate, energetic side of OU students.

The venue shifted to Cafeteria Kasane in the Student Union Building for the social gathering in part 2, which began with a toast from YAMADA Ryuji (1973 graduate of the Graduate School of Engineering; senior advisor, NTT Docomo).

The venue was warm and lively on the sunny spring afternoon, full of friendly conversation between friends both new and old.

In addition, a number of elementary and junior high school students tried their hand at building the Lego® creations of their dreams in the joint project "OU Lego® Club - Hands-on Lego® Workshop."

Thank you for attending this year's Homecoming Day. We hope you will join us again next year!
