The 20th Academic Exchange Seminar between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University held

The 20th Academic Exchange Seminar between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University was held from Saturday, October 20 through Sunday, October 21, 2018. Academic exchange seminars between these two universities have been alternately held since 1995 in accordance with their bilateral academic exchange agreement. To kick off the 20th seminar in the series, Osaka University Executive Vice President KAWAHARA Genta (Global Engagement and Student Support) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Vice President Zhen Huang signed an agreement to start a "Strategic Matching Fund" between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of OU's Global Knowledge Partners. This fund aims to promote strategic joint research and strengthen the relationship between the two universities while acting as a start-up to support further acquisition of external funding in the future.

Seminars and facility tours were held on the 20th and 21st in the 5 fields of materials/joining, information, physics/lasers, marine engineering, and smart city.

Thirty-eight individuals were in attendances from Osaka University, including Executive Vice President KAWAHARA Genta (Global Engagement and Student Support), Professor ONOE Takao (Dean, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology), Professor MINAMI Fumiyoshi (Dean, Joining and Welding Research Institute), Professor SHIMOJO Shinji (Dean, Cybermedia Center), and KOMIZO Yuuichi (Director, East Asian Center for Academic Initiatives).

From Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 40 individuals were present, including Vice President Zhen Huang, Professor Du Zhao-Hui (Dean, School of Mechanical Engineering), and Professor Dai Yan-Jun (School of Mechanical Engineering).

In addition, TAKADA Shigemi (Director, Umekita Planning Division) and MATSUSHITA Tomomi (Head, Development Planning Section, Development Division) of the Osaka City Urban Development Office and Qiu Wei, Director, Shanghai Municipal Commission for Information Technology were in attendance for the 2nd Smart City Joint Workshop in the Smart City portion of the seminar, in which smart city projects in Osaka and Shanghai were introduced.

Additionally, in the Information portion of the seminar, a signing ceremony took place for a Double Degree Program between the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at Osaka University and the School of Electronic, Information and Electrical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University

The Academic Exchange Seminars between Osaka University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University over 20 years have fostered their friendly relationship, providing a crucial foundation for strengthening their collaboration. By strengthening joint research between OU and Shanghai Jiao Tong University through the newly established matching fund, it is anticipated that academic exchange between the two universities will continue to see even further development in the future.
