Sunstar Foundation Hiroo Kaneda Research Grant FY 2025

*Study Abroad Assistance

1. Application period: Tuesday,1 Apr 2025 to Tuesday, 15 Jul 2025

Field: Basic and applied clinical research in the dental and medical fields including the prevention of, and exercise and diet for diabetes, its complications and any other diseases considered to be related to diabetes.

Research topics related to the association between periodontal disease and systemic condition are eligible.

For young researchers in the dental, medical, nutrition, biochemistry field etc.

 2. Number of applicants: 2 people per year

(Medical field: 1 applicant, Dentistry field: 1 applicant)

*Note*The number of grants awarded is subject to change depending on the selection results.

3. Location of study: Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School designated by the Foundation or any other research institute that applicants wish to study at.

Period: 2 years

Grant amount: 110,000 US dollars and 1,000,000 Japanese yen per person in total for travel and living support.

4.Eligible applicants

In addition to the following criteria, applicants must either hold Japanese nationality and reside in Japan or have been granted permanent residency in Japan.

(1) As of 1 April 2025, applicants who obtained their Ph.D. within the past five years (on or after 2 Apr 2020)

   *Applicants expected to obtain Ph.D. at the time of application are also eligible.

   *Applicants whose careers have been interrupted due to maternity leave or other reasons may be eligible. Please contact the Foundation’s office for the details.

(2) Applicants who can depart and begin their research between 1 Jan 2026 and 31 Dec 2026.

*Applicants already studying abroad are not eligible.

(3) Applicants who have sufficient English skills to discuss research details at a research institute.

(4) Applicants who have outstanding knowledge and research achievements.

(5) Applicants who do not receive any duplicate grant for the same research project.

  *Duplicate applications are permitted at the time of application.

(6) Applicants who will not receive a salary from the overseas institution.

  *Applications are permitted if the difference between “the minimum guaranteed salary for postdoctoral researchers” and the Foundation’s grant amount is covered.

(7) Applicants who can receive a recommendation from one of the recommenders listed below.

(8) Applicants who have previously applied for this grant are eligible.

 * However, applicants who have previously received this grant are not eligible

5. Recommenders

(1) Graduate school: Dean of graduate school

 Institute: Director of institute

(2) Research institute (other than graduate school): Supervisor or Head of the institute

(3) Executive director of the Sunstar Foundation

(4) Others

Multiple recommendations from the same graduate school/ institute are accepted.

6. Allocation criteria:

Period: 2 years

Grant amount: 110,000 US dollars and 1,000,000 Japanese yen per person in total for travel and living support.
