Japan Intractable Diseases Research Foundation
As the details provided by the Japan Intractable Diseases Research Foundation are available only in Japanese, this English translation has been prepared by the Department of International Affairs for reference purposes only.
1. Outline
The purpose of this foundation is to conduct research and studies to elucidate pathological conditions and develop treatments for intractable diseases that meet the four conditions specified in the Intractable Disease Law.
In this case, "intractable diseases" refer to a rare condition with no known effective treatment, an unclear pathogenesis, and a need for long-term recuperation.
Notes:
1) Generally, a symposium on diseases with themes similar to those discussed at our foundation’s symposia in the past three years is excluded.
2) Cancer (including childhood cancer), mental illness, infectious diseases, allergies, and lifestyle-related diseases are not covered by this foundation.
2. Period
The symposium or seminar must be held between 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
3. Eligibility
Researchers engaged in incurable disease research at universities or research institutes in Japan.
Multiple applications are not accepted.
4. Allocation
(1) On-site symposium
In the case of an on-site symposium, expenses will be covered within the limit of 10 million yen.
Of this amount, two million yen must be allocated as a travel grant (limited for travel and accommodation expenses) for young researchers from overseas under the age of 40 who will attend the symposium in Japan.
(2) Online symposium
In the case of an online symposium, expenses will be covered within the limit of five million yen.
Approximately 20% of the awarded amount must be allocated to support international researchers under the age of 40 who will participate in the symposium.

Deadline:
1) Deadline for online registration: Monday, 21 July 2025, 11:59 (JST)
2) Deadline for postal submission of the application form: Postmarked by Friday, 25 July 2025
Notes:
1) Submission by regular mail is acceptable, however, please ensure that postal conditions are considered, as application may not be acceptable if delivery fails due to postal issues.
2)Both online registration and postal submission are mandatory.
